What is ‘Supervision’? (or ‘co-Vision’)

Supervision is a vital support and development process to enable continued and ethical professional progress through the complexity of your professional world. Bring an honest self-appraisal of the work you have been doing and how you are doing. Supervision offers a structured, confidential and deliberate space for you, creating optimal conditions for reflection, insights, learning, and personal & professional growth. Support is high and feelings explored, whilst assumptions and beliefs are checked and challenged for robustness and helpfulness. Together this generates greater creativity, maturity and new abilities – which you can then apply with your clients and your system. It applies both to the work you are doing, and to your business development challenges.

Academically speaking, it covers Qualitative (Normative), Developmental (Formative/Educative) and Resourcing (Restorative/Supportive) aspects of a practitioner’s work. See Brigid Proctor (1986 onwards, for therapeutic settings), and Hawkins & Smith (2006 onwards, for coaching settings).

Universal Coaching Alliance Founding Professional Member

While all three are related, compared to Coaching and Mentoring, Supervision emphasises depth of:

  • Assisted reflection on past and recent events, clients and patterns – and their meaning
  • Reflection on self – thoughts, feelings, insights, behaviours, learning
  • Reflexivity – orienting self as both an object and a subject within the landscape of life; reflecting while taking into account our own biases; uncovering assumptions – and so applying one’s own principles to oneself, even more effectively in future.

We work at, integrate and synergise across the following levels:

  • Intrapersonal
  • Interpersonal
  • Managerial
  • Organisational
  • Cross-agency
  • Political
  • Systemic.

All in service of you, the supervisee, and your clients, stakeholders, client’s clients and the wider business and physical environment.

This framework enables you and us to determine the most appropriate form of support. The support is valuable for both new and for very experienced professionals. It aims to progressively enhance your effectiveness and broaden your perspectives, uncover blind spots, gain new insights, navigate challenging client situations more effectively, assist in dealing with ethical dilemmas, deal with unprocessed emotions from the impact of client work, and promote continuous professional development. It’s a personal journey to greater professional excellence, understanding and fulfilment.

Our Business Athlete approach also provides industry-leading support in promoting personal resilience and burnout prevention in the Restorative aspect of Supervision. Colin works with mental health and is accredited in psycho-traumatology and psychodynamics.

Colin has 35 years of experience in coaching – in high-performance sport, business and organisations. In the world of Supervision he became accredited by Bath Consultancy Group (Hawkins, Smith, Ryde, Shohet, Schwenk, 2013) and by the Universal Coaching Alliance (2025).  He works with a balance of cultural sensitivity, respecting lived experience, critical thinking and evidence-informed practice. This can lead to a sense of unfoldment, curiosity, realisation, and greater capability.

Colin’s approach is described as empathetic, insightful, incisive, playful and versatile – aimed at providing clients with a compellingly high return on investment as they grow and apply new ideas and skills in an ongoing virtuous spiral.

What they say

“It was honest, kind and supportive.  I felt you saw me for all the good bits and also what can improve.  That’s why I’m going through the process so I’m very grateful to you. I feel I am aware of some of the reasons for my own behaviours, but talking through them with Colin was invaluable.  Huge thank you for your time and effort; the whole process really has been extraordinary, and I’ve loved it!”
